Sixth Sunday of Easter, 25th May 2025. Cycle C.
FAITH IN FOCUS: CHECKLIST :Today we hear how the disciples had a dispute about what you had to do to belong to the Church. Some said that new converts had to be circumcised and stop eating certain foods or else they could not be counted as belonging to the Christian Church. Others said there were more important things to worry about. If we were making a checklist of things required to show that we were Christians today, what would we put on it? Obviously we would demand that a person believed in God and had been baptised. And then what? "Of course I go to church. I was at three funerals last year," the woman said. But before you can go to church (even three times!) you need a personal relationship with God, not just knowing God exists but not being able to get through the day without talking to God. So do you pray? Do you ever pray even when you're not asking for help? Is Jesus so central to your life that you can't wait for him to come again, to be fully reunited with him? And do you make a point of finding out what God is trying to say to you by reading the Bible? Is your life just like everyone else's or do you live in the kingdom of God? What's your attitude to material possessions, money, success, or status? A good guide to this will be whether or not you ever fast, (not just from food and drink but from something that otherwise would give you pleasure), for God's sake. Would you say you are a generous Christian? Do you freely give your time for others and would you call yourself an active member of the parish, joining in with things and helping where you can? Are you the sort of person who is not embarrassed to spread the word? Do you really yearn for others to have faith in Jesus and how do you play your part in bringing them to it? Have you ever encouraged anyone to come with you to church? And, of course, there's the acid test. Is your life so enriched by your faith in Jesus that when you come to church you just can't help joining in heartily with all the prayers, songs and hymns that thank God and for making us his sons and daughters.
