The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ , 22nd June 2025. Cycle C.
FAITH IN FOCUS: The Body and Blood of Christ
The feast of Corpus et Sanguis Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ) is a vivid reminder to us that, although Jesus has ascended to heaven, he is truly present among us here on earth. Traditionally we say that he is present in four ways: JJesus is present in the message of his word. When the scriptures are proclaimed, Jesus speaks. Jesus is present in his people, the Body of Christ, those who gather in his name to praise and worship God. Jesus is present in the person of the minister who like Jesus calls to repentance, baptises and leads the faithful on their journey towards the Father. Jesus is present in the sacraments, but especially in the eucharist which is the pledge of his abiding presence among us. When we eat his body and drink his blood we make his death and resurrection a reality in our midst until he comes again. So we reserve the eucharist in our tabernacles. We do this first and foremost so that people who are not able to join the parish community through sickness may still take their place at the family table when they receive the communion of the sick. And we see Christ's presence in the tabernacle as the focal point of our devotion and prayer, a devotion that is unpacked and celebrated on this very ancient feast of the Church's year. Corpus Christi reminds us that Jesus has not left us, and that he is very close.
